Web Applications

Web Applications promise a lot of impossible stuff a few years back. The promises are real and exciting but most of the information I come across does point to one short-coming that the said web evolution has to overcome. Security and Reliability are some of the most problematic areas of web based applications. The Internet is more reliable now that ever but it still suffers from occasional hiccups that do get many of us frustrated. And the side of web based applications the security issue is still being addressed for the internet has become more secure with the many steps developers have developed and implemented but who is going to stop someone with the right knowledge from breaking into and causing mayhem on these applications. The data is stored over the internet and transmitted over the internet that can be intercepted and de-coded. These are real world issues that have to be addressed before people would embrace the said move and this is something we all have to wait for.

Trojans in Social Network Applications

If you received an app or widget through some of your friends or buddies at Facebook or MySpace, you’d better think twice better opening and installing at your site. Cyberattackers have included Trojan viruses in some of these apps and installing it in your site maybe dangerous. According to researchers at Finjan, cyberattackers are now going to these social networking sites such to get more victims.

“Attacks will become more sophisticated by combining several services in order to heighten infection ratios and decrease the detection rate, while providing more robust and scalable attack frameworks,” Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer, Finjan, said in a news release. “The focus will be on trojan technology as it enables maximum flexibility in terms of command and control. This adds another potentially malicious element to the ‘legitimate’ web traffic that needs to be examined by security solutions.”

In short, before installing the app or widget that your friend sent you, confirm if it came from them. If it didn’t, kindly delete it immediately. If it did come from them, research on the app or widget from previous users.

Adobe’s Web Applications

adobe.jpgA leader in the development of web based applications, adobe has been leading the pack with many case studies that highlight the potential of web based applications. Case studies like AidMatrix, and Lockheed-Martins E-Stars are web based applications the first allows the deployment of food, medical supplies and other disaster relief needs to those who need it using ColdFusion. E-Stars is the companys Information technology solution to project management which allows simultaneous real-time tracking of projects online that was developed with Macromedia Flash and Cold Fusion.

The GUI Advantage

gui.jpgMost web applications can be grouped into the bland/boring or the nice ones due to utter lack of intense graphics which are signature of some of the best sites on the internet. Netflix is hailed to have one of the most user friendly and entertaining web applications ever that shows the true direction which web applications should take. Add a little customization and you get a page that is as interesting as the products and services they are selling. The combination of all aspects that allows users to choose which to see and which not to waste time on may be the trend of the future for the social web demands interactive GUI’s with graphics and even video if they are allowed. Gone are the bland data entry screens that look like gravestones with data entry fields and other basic and elementary displays, in with the rich and vivid videos and graphics that together make a nice page to view that offer all you need.

Multimedia TV?

inttv.jpgThe introduction of Internet TV which is able to connect directly to your HD TV is set to be the next big thing to come in the world of the lowly television since the advent of flat screens. The ability for digital television to be connected via the internet to the various media sources makes the dream of a totally user customizable television almost a reality. Traditional television transmissions (which are mostly cable TV) rely of expensive coaxial cables that have distance to quality ratios. Internet TV would be similar to getting your PC, booting it up and signing into the sites you wish to visit through a multimedia console such as the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and the several other brands out on the market.

Technological Disruptions – Part of Life?

melt.jpgMay they software glitches, viruses, failed internet links or other reasons, a hiccup in our technology often sends us cursing and mad at the computer by not allowing you to get at your page or checking your mail. The scenario has happened more often than not and many admit to the truths that have been said, we cannot live with the comforts and companionship of our gadgets and gizmos and of course the net. Everybody uses the internet for one reason or the next, but we’re all uneasy at the prospect of living a day without accessing the internet. Experts say that it is becoming more of the stuff that many are expecting to be part of normal life alongside power failures and storms. Just hope they speed up the development of multi-function gadgets to lighten our pockets that holds your cellular phone, mp3 player, PDA’s and the many other gadgets we carry around, not counting the laptop slung on your shoulders or back.

Google Gears – Beware Office

gears1.jpgoffice.jpgAs Google Gears gets a service pack that allows it to function off-line, many are questioning the existence of rivalry between the two companies. Google’s Gears has become somewhat of a threat to the Office Line of software Microsoft made. Gaining off-line capabilities allows Gears to function much like the MS office with similar capabilities. Google has also added points to it’s relationship with developers with their release of the source code of the Gears program allowing developers to add their own touches to the program itself, an act Microsoft has been treating as a crime and an act of divulging company secrets. They have recently allowed some to view the source codes of office as they try to get the attention of developers, but their efforts are considered to be too cold at best by the many developers and programmers out there.

Mobile and Desktop Applications from the Web

Software developed for interactivity to the web has now been categorized into two areas, mobile and standard. Standard of course pertains to the fact that this is the usual application that you can install on your usual laptop or desktop. Mobile caters more towards mobile phones and small computers that allow any owner to access the web with a limited capacity.

There are large differences between the two and apparently you will want to stick to the traditional one. But while that is true, you cannot discount that the Internet is quite a need wherever you may be today. Such is the reason for the need to develop mobile software today.

Too Late the Friendster Heroes

Friendster may have taken too much time rejoicing its success some years back. Five years ago, it was indeed the hottest site on the web. Today, it continues to be around but it has obviously taken a backseat to Facebook.

Noticing this dip, you can see that they are trying to win back their subscribers. A lot of accounts have been abandoned and most people are on the Facebook bandwagon.

This should serve as a lesson. No matter how successful you are, do not let your guard down. Once you do, you will notice that it may be costly. Such is what Facebook is experiencing right now.

WebApps on NetBooks – How Well Do they Work?

Netbooks promised the complete web experience without the weight of a full sized laptop which was something to be proven for they have been around for such a short time. Overall they performed quite beautifully if you select web options that are more on the minimal side for as you know, net books have limited amounts of ROM and ram to operate on. They do a lot of the normal stuff nicely such as streaming video and others but don;t count too much on high resolution display for they do have very small screens. Viewing video, you should consider something with at least 1024 resolution so you get the ability to view HD formatted stuff but try not to go for the highest resolution in the selection phase of the video you opt to view.
