In a bold move by Google Inc., their recent purchase Writely is currently being developed into web based spreadsheet and documents in the form of Google docs and Spreadsheets. Along with the release of Google Gears, it is expected to take a slice of the market that used to be exclusively monopolized by the Office system. Zoho writer which is now in betas testing along with Thinkfree are also web based document software that allows other users to edit your work making the job of collaboration with peers on a project easier.
This gives many people the thought of, why the hell do I have to buy a word processing package that is worth a couple of hundred bucks when I can get the same functionality with these free downloads. Another plus from these free editors, they interface with office and other applications on other platforms. The documents you edit and upload can be used in word and Open-Office(MS Offices counterpart in Linux)
